Open AI's new o1 model: The race to super intelligence

Summer’s fading away, autumn is setting in, and OpenAI has just revealed their latest card in the Artificial Intelligence race.

I was sent this message by one of our software engineers and, like many of you, was very confused upon reading it.

After watching the video and searching on Urban Dictionary, I learnt two things:

  1. “We are cooked” is Gen-Z speak for “We are in trouble.”

  2. OpenAI, the folks behind ChatGPT, have just released their most powerful Large Language Model, named o1.

The video was an example of someone showing how you can generate an entire interactive game from a single prompt with their new LLM.

And I’ll be honest, overall the o1 model is pretty impressive:

  • It scores higher in its accuracy in answering PhD-level science questions.

  • There’s been a significant jump in its ability to perform reasoning.

Honestly, it’s a maths and coding genius at this point, scoring in the top 83rd and 89th percentiles for competition maths and coding, respectively.

Over the next week, we’re probably going to see a lot of people go into a frenzy, taking to LinkedIn and claiming things like:

“There’s no point in learning how to code or being a programmer! AI is one step closer to replacing us! [insert the screaming toad gif]

And so, whilst many will fall into fear-mongering, they’ll completely miss the whole point of this ‘leap’ in intelligence. It’s a new addition to our toolkit, not to replace us!
